Paintings by Jane Eccles
Featuring seven monumental works, circa 1960s New Jersey, as well as works from Ms. Eccles current painting series titled Music Overlays. In this series, Ms. Eccles, herself an accomplished pianist, references some of her favorite selections from the musical genres of classical and jazz. Richard Diebenkorn’s collages and paintings in the Ocean Park series serve as the foundation for each painting.

LOVE LETTERS: “I will cover you with love when next I see you …” *
A large-scale Invitational featuring an evocative visual inquiry into physical love, from gender to sex to sexual orientation. Within a variety of artistic traditions, Love Letters encompasses myriad notions of sexual instinct and motivation, the passions of courtship, and the wondrous odyssey of the body in sensual relationship with another.
*Title references a letter authored by renowned French writer Gustave Flaubert to his wife, Louise Colet, when he was 25 years old.

LOVE LETTER OPEN MIC: Saturday, August 17th … 3-5PM
An open invitation to the public to join the Love Letters artists in reading their personally-authored love letters. Participants are asked to bring a letter that describes their love for another and to read it aloud at the mic. Curator Danton offers a hint to would-be participants, “Think of someone you truly love. When was the last time you saw them? What would you say if, once again, you found yourselves face to face? Perhaps the object of your love is, right now, standing by your side. Turn and face them … What words of love are memorializing this moment …” No prizes or applause, just a heartfelt sharing of as much love as we can collectively muster. Refreshment and camaraderie will be served during this captivating public event.

FROM THE BOLD EARTH: Paintings in the Figurative Tradition by Teresa Baksa and Kathleen Sidwell
Miller White artists Teresa Baksa and Kathleen Sidwell join forces to compel an oft-shared muse — the Goddess — in creating an intimate sojourn of the female form within the natural world. In full recognition of the fact that life is an exercise in discovery, Baksa and Sidwell expertly balance figures and flowers with a delightful, subliminal message — these images are not mere still lives, but rather gestures of sensual and revolutionary affection. The Goddess never fails us; she steadfastly aids in our own flowering, through all manner of joy and pain.

BEST PRACTICES: A fine arts Invitational featuring the works of 30 artists of local, national and international renown, curated around an individual and collective investigation into what may constitute best practices in the world of fine art.
Nearly every professional industry discusses best practices; now is the time for the arts industry to weigh in. There is no greater agent for social change than that which art provides. For the sake of those who come after us, teaching the children well is the core reason for best practices; the best artists of today are the ones who are actively tilling future ground.
In this show, thirty artists and one curator embrace future generations with works and words that are emblematic of their own best practices as arts professionals. A daring and evocative show, Best Practices attempts to blend technical mastery with clear ethical ideals into an interactive construct that addresses some of the universal concerns we currently face, with an ever-present urge toward remediation and progress.

ANNE GARTON & ULLA NEIGENFIND: Atmosphere Unbounded
Working within the Luminism tradition, Anne Garton’s painting style stresses the emotional force of a scene versus rendering a facade of features, underscoring the ambient components and capturing the very aura of Nature’s will to express itself. Far beyond the constraints of material depictions, Garton takes the viewer to a place where the beauty of Nature is truth, and that same truth is, in fact, beauty.
Excitement, mystery and sheer pleasure inform the abstract paintings of Ulla Neigenfind. Her process is driven by a visceral urge to touch, rub and scratch until works emerge that simmer in sensuality. This is romance of an utterly higher nature.

EXPRESSING FREEDOM: Transcendence Through Art
Freedom of expression is key to the development, dignity and fulfillment of every person on the planet. It is the ability to state your frame of mind respectfully and peacefully, and allow others that same right. The importance of this is self-evident yet, tragically, masses of people are today prevented from doing so by forces outside of their real or perceived control.
“When I think of the relationship between artists and society — and for me the question is always what it could be, rather than what it is — I think of the word “transcendent.” It is a word I never use in public, but it’s the only word I can come up with to describe what I think about the role of artists. By transcendent, I mean that the artist transcends the immediate. Transcends the here and now. Transcends the madness of the world. Transcends terrorism and war. The artist thinks, acts, performs music, and writes outside the framework that society has created. The artist may do no more than give us beauty, laughter, passion, surprise, and drama. I don’t mean to minimize these activities by saying the artist can do no more than this. The artist needn’t apologize, because by doing this, the artist is telling us what the world should be like, even if it isn’t that way now. The artist is taking us away from the moments of horror that we experience everyday — some days more than others — by showing us what is possible. But the artist can and should do more. In addition to creating works of art, the artist is also a citizen and a human being … What most of us must be involved in — whether we teach or write, make films, write films, direct films, play music, act, whatever we do — has to not only make people feel good and inspired and at one with other people around them, but also has to educate a new generation to do this very modest thing: change the world.” ― Howard Zinn, Artists in Times of War and Other Essays, 2003
By virtue of Howard Zinn’s words above, the artists of this exhibition have given us images and words that reflect his conviction that there is no greater catalyst for change than that which art provides. By allowing their works to act as agents of their own ideals and values, the artists hope to inspire others to freely, respectfully and peacefully do the same.

For those who would like to view the show prior to the typical crush of a public reception, come to our gallery talk. Meet the artists, hear the poets and examine the theme of Freedom of Expression, together. Viewers will then become active participants by expressing their own ideals for freedom on two community-based murals through inspired words and images. Drawing and writing materials will be provided, and no prior artistic experience is required — only a love for freedom and a willingness to share it. So that the gift keeps on giving, the action and testimonials will be memorialized for sharing on social media for an infinite audience to enjoy, learn from and pass forward — until the world is free and at peace.

HOLIDAY 2016: SAVING GAIA: THE SEVEN THUNDERS
MWFA artists and guests visually interpret a film script to create a film trailer
Miller White Fine Arts Gallery is excited to offer an exhibition that breaks down the barrier between still and moving images in a significant and surprising project. The exceptional creative talents of more than twenty artists will exhibit their visual interpretations of a film script written by acclaimed screenwriter, Rory Marcus.
The Seven Thunders is a thrilling sci-fi adventure in which young heroes must save all life on the planet while genetically engineered suprahumans attempt to destroy the earth’s atmosphere by accelerating global warming.
The artists will express their deeply felt feelings about the dangers to the planet through artworks in oil, print, collage, and photography in their individual styles. These stunning images will then become the visuals for the short trailer for the film, produced by Marcus and shown at the gallery throughout the exhibition.
Based on science and written by Marcus more than ten years ago, The Seven Thunders is an odyssey of extraordinary youths that reveals an astonishingly prescient scenario of the risks for our future that we can see unfolding today. This exhibit will raise questions that artists and scientists will address in gallery talks throughout the term of the show.

AT THE CROSSROADS: SIX NARRATIVES AT THE INTERSECTION OF IDENTITY AND COMMUNITY
At the Crossroads features six Cape Cod-based artists delving into different social ecosystems represented by the Natural World, the Family, the Village, the Odyssey, the Mask and the Friend. The linking common theme is how identity and community interact and are ultimately preserved, archived and displayed for a dialogue.
The curator, Susan Danton, suggests that the question “Who are you?” has never been more relevant nor more difficult to answer than it is today. Through the plethora of electronically transmitted information available in the blink of an eye, each of us is unrelentingly hounded by the many competing forces that want to define us as “them.” Often, the din results in an internal split consciousness, which discord then provokes conflict within our relationships. There is indeed a certain glamour intrinsic to the sheer immediacy of information flow, but there is also a resident danger in the crisis of glibness it creates. In other words, to answer the above question, we must discover where we end and others begin.
At the Crossroads offers the viewer an opportunity examine these junctures, as well as revolutionize his/her self-awareness in relation to them.
